Hi Lisa! I am glad you are here on the ECM Network! My son is in 7th grade and he is really enjoying Florida Virtual School so far. After last year's nightmare experience, it has been a great breath of fresh air. The teachers are SO responsive and the lesson are very interactive and even downright fun!

We have not attended out first homeschool group meeting so I am still learning about that area of homeschooling. There is a kickoff meeting on September 1st, however I have heard nothing but great things about this particular group. I have been concerned about my son's social opportunities (as we have moved 3 times in the past 5 years). We are supposed to be in our current location for at least 4 years, so I am hoping he can make some good connections. We are fairly new to homeschooling (we just did it for half the school year last year). I bet you have all kinds of tips to share, being an experienced homeschool mom. So glad to have you in the group!

Hi Amber! I have been homeschooling for many years now, but this is my first time doing Ohio's Virtual School. So far my 10th grader likes it. It gives him more structure then what I was giving him and he really likes all his teachers. I just signed up my 10th grader but I'm thinking I might sign up my other children for next year. We'll see how this year goes. You're fortunate to have a homeschool group for support. Glad to be a part of this group & looking forward to meeting everyone. : )

Update, my son is doing Florida Virtual School and is liking it so far :) We are excited to get into a local Homeschool group for support. How is it going with everyone else-are we starting the school year off with a bang?

Hi ladies,
I find myself at the end of a nightmare experience with an online school and looking into other options. I won't go into detail, but I will just say that Ablaze Academy should be avoided. I think that online school is still a good option for my son, and am looking at the Florida virtual school. This is actually funded by the state of Florida and has gotten rave reviews from parents and teachers alike. They seem to have a student centered, teacher led approach with an emphasis on technology but also getting the kids out from behind the computer (they have projects like collecting water samples and analyzing them, a virtual science fair, and interviewing local leaders). I am staying in prayer about the situation as I need to make a decision for my son within the next week. He needs the individual and self-paced instruction, and responds well to technology. I am looking for a mix of all of this. God will lead the way.

Sarah,
Good for you! I pray that homeschooling will be a blessing for you and your family. One of the things that we have most enjoyed is "hands on: life learning that can take place during a normal day. We have taken some fun field trips to match with our curriculum and my son's interest. We have the time to do that because there isn't as much wasted time as there is in a larger school setting (changing classes, etc) We have all already learned so much!

Hi Mary! Welcome to the homeschool group! We have been homeschooling my son for about a month and have been so much happier so far. It took a lot of prayer and research to come to the decision, but it has proved to be a blessing for us. The main thing that I enjoy is the ability to control what my son is learning, to be able to cater to his interests (while still staying within grade standards), the elimination of unhealthy influences, and the elimination of wasted time (which was a major source of frustration for him).

I am not homeschooling yet but I am praying about and researching the possibility. Would love to hear how you decided to homeschool and what has worked for you! Thanks!

Hi Sarah,
Welcome to the ECM Homeschooling group! My son is actually doing an online academy, as opposed to parent led homeschooling. It seems to be a good fit for us so far, but we have only just begun. I am providing some elective activities to enrich his learning, but the core subjects are all done online. It is fun and interactive for him. My main responsibility is to keep him on task. One great resource that I have found in my travels is aheartofwisdom.com.
When my kids were younger we used a work book approach.
