I have someone in my life that is so disappointed that the books I read are mostly children's books. Let's face it, I have a six year old and a three year old.. that's all I have time for!
We read one of my favorites tonight. It's called, "Just the Way You Are" by Max Lucado. It's about five orphaned children who are told they are going to be adopted by the king. The townspeople tell the children that they must have a special talent or gift to offer the king, because they think the king needs t…

So, I spent a good deal of last night working out why I was so upset and what God is really wanting to do work out in me through Leilee's medical issues, my little sister, the hurting families and the lost loved ones. I didn't really figure anything out and just spent most of today feeling sleep deprived and a little foggy. On my way to work this morning I did hear a great sermon on 88.1. Pastor So-and-So was talking about how we should examine ourselves for something that we see is holding us b…

The thing I dread the most is losing one of my children. Just the thought terrifies me. And of course, being a paranoid, crazy mother, just about everything sends my thoughts in that direction. That being said, I then begin to feel guilty about being so terrified of death and dying when I serve a God who is in total control. We can't run from death, we can't avoid the inevitable, and we live in a fallen world where tragedy happens every day.
I do my best to comfort myself with the thought that…

Recently my husband had found out the Fire Department he is working for is currently going through a major budget crisis. The bad news is there could be all the way from lay offs to major budget cuts, including the loss of a lot of the benefits he has including health insurance.
We have been through a lay off before. We have been through many difficult situations before. But for some reason this time it's a bit harder to swallow. Simply because this does NOT fit into MY plans for the New Year.…

Wow! This is a big topic for me, I may actually tackle it in two blog posts this week!
First, I have to say I was known for my severe impatience when I was younger (Just ask Daisy-she is my sister!). God has really dealt with me in so many ways as a mom, to teach me about this virtue of patience. I have grown in this area greatly, but sometimes I still struggle. In terms of having patience with my kids, I always have to remind myself of the grace that God extends to us. I think of how many time…

I think that as moms (grandmothers) we must let our children see us live our life to glorify God. We must live that life in private at home as well as in the public sector. I once heard a wise man say "live your life in such a way that you would sell your parrot to the town gossip."
Saying one thing to our children and living the opposite is only confusing to our children. If we tell them it is wrong to lie or steal and "bring home office supplies" or have the children tell the telephone caller…

I was working as a social worker and had just gone to conduct a home visit. As soon as I arrived, the manager of the facility met me at the door and told me about the first plane that had hit the twin towers. I was speechless and after watching the news on the TV we realized how serious this tragedy was. Needless to say, I did not conduct the home visit I had gone to do. Instead I went to my car and cried. I cried for the victims that had lost their lives and for the families that loved them. I…

I want to write a note to you that says, "I love you and thank you for allowing me to be your mother." I realize there were times that you probably wished you could trade me in for one of your friends' mother but you were "stuck" with me. To be honest there were times when I wished you behaved as well as another mother's child. But that wish was only for a fleeting moment in a lifetime of joy and pain, laughter and tears. That mother with the "well-behaved" children would confide in me that she…

I am amazed when my children teach me a lesson I should have known. "Tater" let Pugsley, our dog, out of the gate where he is allowed to play. While I was chasing the dog (I hear you all laughing now) I was reminded of how this is how we are when we run from God. He tries so hard to pursue us and we let Him get so close then we start running from Him again. I am amazed because this is an idea for my book that I am writing.
It's true kids do say the darnedest thing but they also teach us the dar…

Okay so here is my blog post for the week, staying with the theme "My Kids Amaze Me".
My kids continue to amaze me by teaching me something new almost daily. I firmly believe that children are God's way of revealing Himself to us. The joy of parenthood lets us experience a piece the love that God feels for us as His children.
To illustrate how my kids "teach" me, I will share a story that actually happened this Sunday.
We were on our way home from church (I had my 9 year old daughter and four…

This actually happened about a month. When something like this happens I usually go ballistic. I think God was guarding me and the children that day.
Dear God,
Do you have a minute or two?
I have had a really bad day
And need to talk to you.
After searching in five different stores
For a left-handed T-ball glove
(what a grandparent won't do for love!)
I found it and brought it home so the kids could play.
But I should have known from the start of my day
An accident was bound to happen
When two…

Years ago my husband and I were on our way to Nashville, TN to pick up my parents at the airport. We had gotten about halfway there when we ran out of gas. We had filled the tank before we left but we did not know the gas tank had a small hole in it.
Since we had no money for gas, we were worried about our situation and had no way to contact my parents. A short while later, a young couple stopped to help us. Since it was not feasible to put gas in the car--it would only leak out again, they took…

There are so many ways to show kindness and I have been shown much in my life. Just listening to someone who needs to vent, or to someone who needs just to have someone to talk to no matter what the conversation. God says that the measure in which we give will be measured back to us. It is good to give time, attention, love and to share with all in need. God shares with us everyday!!!

A Small But Significant Act of Kindness
I recently encountered an act of kindness that really touched me when my four year old daughter was having a hard day in the grocery store. Granted, I had made the unwise decision of taking her to the grocery store late in the day when I knew she was tired, however, I had rationalized that I just needed to pick up a few things, it wouldn't take that long, and everything would be fine-right? WRONG. The store was packed, the child was tired,…

I was just sitting here doing my daily bible reading and realized that it is truly a sign of the times that I am reading the bible on my iphone! With the application I am using, it is so easy to change the translation, search, bookmark, read, follow a bible reading plan and have it at my finger tips. Since I take my phone every where, I always have the WORD at my side. It has actually encouraged me to refer to it more, what a blessing! I can pull it out while I am waiting somewhere or when I am…

"And a certain sign of grace is this.... through broken earth, flowers come up, pushing through the dirt."
What a foolish notion, grace. Who deserves it? Many feel they don't need it. Only fools understand and accept it. The educated scoff at the idea that men, the most "evolved" species with the highest intelligence would have need of God's love and forgiveness. After all, we are capable of doing good. Those of us who are positive forces in the community, who believe in the inner good of man a…

The other day the whole family packed up and headed into Port Angeles and Sequim for a day of crabbing, shrimping and oyster shucking... Jason, brave and awesome dad that he is, held the sole honor of shucking, since I had Leilee in the Napsack and Connor and Grady are much too young to wield oyster shuckers. Jason also had the cool dad idea of packing the kids' bikes in the back of the truck and letting them ride on the pier. We brought helmets because I said it was the law.
Now, some of you m…
